Mission of the Mitchell County Senior Center
To improve the lives of older adults in Mitchell County
Department Overview
The Mitchell Senior Center is dedicated to assisting the older adults in Mitchell County to maintain their own home as long as possible. We offer a variety of programs and services designed especially for the older adult.
Facility
The Mitchell Senior Center is a spacious 12,500 square foot building that offers something for everyone. Whether you come out for socialization, entertainment, education, exercise or just the delicious nutritionally balanced lunch you will find a warm welcome among family and friends.
Services
Congregate Meals: Nutritious meals are provided five days a week. Meals are prepared at the Senior Center daily by our trained Kitchen Staff. Educational programs are provided weekly as part of our “Lunch and Learn” series. Topics can vary from health, scam alerts, nutrition, safety, financial and many more. Please call before 10:00 a.m. if you wish to have your name placed on the lunch roll.
Home Delivered Meals: Homebound older adults receive nutritious meals five days a week. Meals are prepared daily in the Senior Center kitchen and delivered by dedicated volunteers.
In-Home Aide Program: Trained Aides provide this basic home management service to eligible older adults to enable them to remain at home as long as possible.
Transportation: In coordination with the Mitchell County Transportation Authority the Senior Center provides funding for older adults to access transportation to and from the Senior Center daily.
Exercise Program: Classes are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. The Exercise
Classes, led by a trained professional from the Blue Ridge Regional Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department involve:
- Strengthening Exercises
- Joint Motion Exercises
- Conditioning/Aerobics
- Balance
- Coordination
- Self Heart Rate Monitoring
- Educational Classes
We also have Schwinn stationary bicycles and a stair stepper exerciser available anytime. The Center also has a wide assortment of videos to assist with your personal exercise regime anytime you wish. An outside walking track is also very popular, especially on warmer days. This track is utilized by the community as well as seniors as a safe and convenient addition to aid in their general overall fitness.
Arts and Crafts: This Department is open everyday with a Craft Instructor on Monday and Thursday.
